Every season has its charm, but winter at Plitvice Lakes provides an experience wholly different from the warmer seasons. While spring and summer captivate visitors with vividly colored flowers and lush greenery, and autumn brings a spectacle of warm tones, winter wraps this National Park in a cold and peaceful cloak, providing a unique opportunity to enjoy nature.

Frozen waterfalls and winter landscapes

One of the most impressive sights Plitvice Lakes offers in wintertime is the frozen waterfalls. These waterfalls, vibrant and bubbling in autumn, transform into magnificent crystalline ice sculptures with the arrival of colder days, creating a true winter wonderland. Famous for its 16 lakes connected by waterfalls, Plitvice Lakes takes on a special, almost surreal appearance in winter. Ice formations create unusual and unpredictable shapes that constantly change depending on the weather, making each visit unique. Snow blankets the dense forests and emerald-green lakes, enhancing the captivating scenery. The idyllic white cover brings a sense of peace and silence, while the contrast between snow, ice, and dark green evergreen trees creates a striking winter landscape. Even when there is no snow, the Park retains its magic. The frozen waterfalls and pristine lakes offer an unforgettable experience, and the fresh, clean air filled with the scent of the forest provides a perfect opportunity to relax and restore your energy. For those seeking winter adventures, the nearby ski and sledding resort Mukinje offers a way to stay active on holiday while enjoying all that winter has to offer. Regardless of the weather, the Park encourages its winter visitors to enjoy nature and find peace in this landscape far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Winter walks and quiet trails

Winter offers a special experience for visitors who enjoy peaceful hikes. While in summer you may encounter many visitors on the trails, winter offers the chance to explore the park in almost complete silence. The trails are covered in snow, and the crunch of footsteps on snowy paths and the quiet in the air make you feel as if you are alone with nature. It’s important to note that despite all the charms of winter, visitors are advised not to underestimate the conditions and to bring comfortable, warm clothing and appropriate footwear to fully enjoy the beauty of nature. One of the distinctive features of winter walks in Plitvice Lakes National Park is the feeling of discovery, even if you’ve visited the Park during warmer months. Under snow and ice, familiar scenes take on a whole new dimension.

Wildlife in winter

Although most animals retreat to their shelters to survive the winter, winter at Plitvice Lakes still has opportunities for animal watching. Birds such as woodpeckers, owls, and hawks remain active during winter, and observing their behavior during this cold period provides a unique insight into how they adapt to harsh conditions. Winter at Plitvice Lakes also offers the fascinating activity of tracking animal footprints in the snow. The snow becomes a canvas where stories of life in the Park are recorded, with each track revealing the presence and movements of its hidden residents, such as red deer, roe deer, and other species. It’s important to note that wild animals should not be fed. They are part of a delicate ecosystem that adapts to natural conditions, and human intervention, such as feeding, can disrupt its balance and the animals’ natural behavior patterns. Winter wildlife watching highlights the harmony between nature and its inhabitants, offering a chance for deeper reflection on the coexistence of plants and animals. Each species deals with the challenges brought on by low temperatures and snow in its own way, and the tracks in the snow, birds in flight, and the quiet of the winter landscape create an invaluable experience for all who want to witness the magic of nature in its most raw yet most beautiful form.

Everything you need to plan your trip in 2024

Winter and photography: Perfect conditions for creatives

The winter scenery at Plitvice Lakes is a special treat for photographers. The snow-covered landscape and frozen waterfalls create unique scenes, ideal for those who want to capture spectacular nature photographs. Frozen waterfalls, like the Great Waterfall, become favorite subjects for photographers. Winter is a time when nature shows both its harshness and incredible beauty in the contrast between white snow and emerald lakes. For photographers seeking interesting details, winter sights such as ice crystals on tree branches or frozen waterfalls offer endless possibilities for creative shots. The light is soft, and the scenes are often wrapped in morning frost or fog, allowing for dramatic and attractive photographs. Reflections in frozen lakes and the layers of snow emphasize the interplay of light and shadow, making each shot special. Additionally, since there are significantly fewer visitors in winter, photographers have the chance to capture the landscape in its most peaceful and intimate form. Whether you’re using a professional camera or just a smartphone, Plitvice Lakes in winter will surely not disappoint you.

Environmental protection and preservation for future generations

Sustainable tourism and nature conservation are top priorities at Plitvice Lakes, especially during winter. Although visitors are allowed to explore the Park, it is important to respect the Park rules and use only marked trails to minimize the impact on this fragile ecosystem. In winter, the Upper Lakes, spread across the forest, are closed to allow nature to rest. Wildlife adapts to the cold, with many species entering hibernation or changing their activities. This is why it is important to preserve peace and quiet and leave as few traces of human presence in the environment as possible. True nature lovers understand that preserving this beautiful scenery is not just an obligation but a privilege. They will do anything to keep the environment intact, aware that Plitvice Lakes are home to many plant and animal species that depend on preserved nature. Leaving only footprints, without disturbing the natural balance, ensures that future generations can enjoy the same incredible sights. The Park regularly educates visitors on the importance of nature conservation, and winter is the ideal time to reflect on the harmony between humans and nature.

Accommodation and local cuisine: Enjoying warmth after exploration

After a day spent exploring the charms of winter, visitors can relax in the comfort of Hotel Jezero, located near the Flora secondary entrance. This ideal location provides quick access to natural attractions while offering everything necessary for a pleasant stay. Hotel Jezero offers a rich selection of facilities for relaxation and recreation. The experience of deep rest is enhanced by modern luxuries – a whirlpool bath, Finnish sauna, Turkish steam bath, and a beauty salon. These amenities provide relaxation and rejuvenation, offering the perfect balance between active nature exploration and rest in the hotel’s cozy ambiance. The hotel’s menu is enriched with local specialties prepared using ingredients marked with the Lika Quality label, highlighting the authenticity and quality of local cuisine. Near Entrance 1 is the Lička Kuća restaurant, known for its traditional dishes. Here you can enjoy meals that reflect the richness of Lika’s cuisine, and all visitors have the chance to taste specialties made from the finest local ingredients. Whether you’re a meat lover, a fan of fish, or a vegetarian, the food offered at our hotel and the Lička Kuća restaurant will surely meet your expectations and satisfy your palate.

Winter at Plitvice Lakes offers a unique experience that combines peace, tranquility, and the beauty of one of Croatia’s most famous natural wonders. Whether you come for photography, to enjoy winter activities, or simply to escape the rush of everyday life, this park will delight you. Sustainability and nature conservation remain essential, and visitors are encouraged to respect the environment so that this beauty remains untouched for future generations. A winter visit to Plitvice offers the opportunity to connect with nature in its quietest and most intimate form, transforming landscapes covered in snow and ice into a winter wonderland that deserves to be experienced at least once in a lifetime.

New York is not the capital of the United States, nor is it the largest or most populous state. However, New York, along with California, is the most well-known state in the United States. If you spend a couple of days in New York and use the subway, you might meet people from every country in the globe because the city is so varied! If you visit the United States, you must go to New York; it has something for everyone.

New York is one of the most sought-after destinations on the planet. If you ask me to name ten cities in the world from memory, New York will undoubtedly be one of them. I’m very sure I’m not the only one with these characteristics. New York is a fascinating megacity and one of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities. Although you can spend several weeks or months touring the city, many people only have a limited amount of time. For them, I’ve put together this ultimate travel guide to spending a day in New York. If you want to take it slow, you can easily follow this guide to spend two days in New York as well!

Walk in SoHo

Soho in ManhattanSoho in Manhattan
One of the many beautiful buildings in SoHo, New York

Your trip to New York will begin in SoHo. Walking down SoHo’s street gave me a great feeling; you have to stroll there to feel it. SoHo is a neighborhood in lower Manhattan located south of Houston Street. It has distinct architecture consisting of cast iron buildings. They were previously warehouses but have since been converted into residential buildings, restaurants, art galleries, and other purposes. Its cobblestone streets, particularly Mercer and Greene, will transport you back in time via a time machine. This is the spot to go if you want to do some high-end shopping. Not to mention some of the top eateries in the neighborhood. In a nutshell, architecture, shopping, cuisine, the arts, and a bustling atmosphere have made SoHo a must-see destination for tourists visiting New York.

Rockefeller Park

Rockefeller Park is located next to Battery Park. From here, one can see the entire metropolis of New Jersey. I had a great time spending time there! The dense clouds are constantly changing their mood and creating new vibes on the river. The cityscape on top of it was a divine experience in and of itself.

9/11 Memorial & Museum

About 3000 people were killed on September 11, 2001, and this is in their loving memory.

The twin tower attacks on September 11, 2001, shook the world. Terrorists hijacked planes and slammed them into the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers, which were two of the world’s five tallest buildings at the time. The 9/11 memorial and museum are dedicated to the memory of those who died on September 11, 2001. The memorial consists of two reflecting pools, each roughly the size of the Twin Towers’ original footprints. A grove of 400 swamp white oak trees surrounds the pools. The names of the 2,977 people killed in the attacks are etched onto the pools’ walls. People can be seen laying flowers on those names.

Spending some time there will transport you back in time and give you the belief that, at the end of the day, mankind will resist all forms of terrorism. The museum tells the story of the attacks through artifacts and photographs and provides you with a timeline of the attacks. You can buy tickets for the 9/11 memorial online to avoid the line.

The World Trade Center Transportation Hub, popularly known as the Oculus, is located right next to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. This is a well-known transportation hub as well as an architectural icon. The oculus is a large structure that resembles bird wings. The building is intended to inspire a sense of uplift and hope, paying respect to the spirit of resilience that arose in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. It is near the 9/11 Memorial and serves as an entrance to the memorial. If you don’t pass by this station, you should go inside; I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

Wall Street

New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)—since 1792!

Who doesn’t enjoy money? And the first thing that springs to mind when I hear about getting money is Wall Street! Wall Street has a tremendous impact on the global financial system. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), the world’s largest stock exchange, is located here. Furthermore, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York is based here, and it controls the interest rate, which determines how much your cash will be worth tomorrow.

“Charging Bull” or “The Wall Street Bull” is located just a few blocks from the New York Stock Exchange. This bronze sculpture represents the market’s (the American people’s) power and hope. When the stock market rises, we refer to it as bullish, and everyone rejoices! If you want to snap a photo in front of the sculpture, you must wait in line. You will notice a young girl facing the charging bull named “Fearless Girl” near the charging bull; it represents women’s empowerment in the market.

The Battery

New York is not only a city of skyscrapers; it has a lot of greeneries as well

The Battery (formerly known as Battery Park City) is a planned community located in Lower Manhattan, New York City. Situated on the southwestern tip of Manhattan, it occupies approximately 92 acres of land. It has expansive green spaces to enjoy your time.

What attracted me most in this park were some of the weird sculptures. Some of them were miniscule, and some of them were bigger in stature.

Battery Park City will also provide you with an opportunity to enjoy waterfront views, gardens, walking paths, and recreational facilities.

Statue of Liberty

Libertas, the Roman Goddess of liberty, is standing tall in the liberty island

The Statues of Liberty, a gift from the French people in 1886, are undoubtedly the most recognizable symbols of the United States. The statue holds a torch in one hand and a book with the date of the US Declaration of Independence in the other. A broken chain and shackle on her feet represent the end of slavery in the United States. If you don’t have a strong desire to see the Statue of Liberty, you can leave it off of your one-day itinerary in New York. It is located on Ellis Island and will take up a significant portion of your day if you visit. However, you can see the Statue of Liberty from Battery Park in Manhattan. I took the photo above in front of the East Coast Memorial of the Battery.

I suggest you to book this 60 minutes trip which will take you near the Statue of Liberty, from where you can take good photos.

Brooklyn Bridge Park

You have to see Brooklyn bridge when you are in New York

If you’ve ever seen a movie set in New York, you’ve probably seen the Brooklyn Bridge. The Brooklyn Bridge is widely regarded as New York’s most iconic structure. This well-known bridge connects Manhattan to Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Bridge is best seen at night, when it glitters. Brooklyn Bridge Park provides an excellent vista. The Brooklyn Bridge Park offers stunning views of the Manhattan skyline and the East River as well.

Hudson River Park

You will be able to enjoy such performances in Hudson River Park

Throughout the year, Hudson River Park conducts a variety of events and programming. Concerts, outdoor movie screenings, exercise courses, educational events, and festivals are among them. The park’s event calendar is frequently packed with programs for people of all ages and interests. When I was there, a group of artists were performing some mind boggling songs.

If you have been to Greece, you know what an amphitheater should look like. In Hudson River Park, you will find a cute little amphitheater made of wood. You may sit there and stare out over the bay. As the pleasant breeze blows, you might be lured by some music.

The High Line Park

High Line Park is not a typical park!

You need to go to High Line Park for its uniqueness! It’s an elevated linear park in Manhattan. It is built on the West Side Line, a historic elevated railway track that was previously utilized for freight trains.

In Highline Park, I discovered a multicolored wall. Anyone can draw or write whatever they like; there were a few complimentary pens on the floor. It was fascinating to see how many people came here and left their markings on the wall. I couldn’t resist writing anything in Bangla, my native language, on that wall, leaving a small imprint of myself in the enormous New York City!

Hudson Yards

Skyscrapers abound in New York City, as you’ve probably seen in movies or TV shows. However, if you want to be surrounded by skyscrapers, you must go to Hudson Yards. It is the largest private real estate development (18 million square feet) in US history, consisting of 16 towers, including the highest structure on Manhattan’s west side. You can’t miss the VESSEL, a honeycomb-like structure made up of interconnecting staircases and platforms, if you go there. Don’t forget to ascend its 154 flights of stairs to gain a bird’s-eye view of the city. You will find public spaces, parks, and greeneries to rest in.

When the sun goes down, make your way to Times Square. If New York is synonymous with the United States, then Time Square is synonymous with New York. Few places in the world are as lively, brilliant, and sparkling as Times Square. It’s no surprise that New Year’s Eve in New York is celebrated in Times Square. Don’t miss it if you are there on New Year’s Eve.

Thanksgiving is traditionally a time spent with friends and family, but if you’d rather put your feet up and let someone else take care of hosting and catering, then why not elevate this precious time of year by spending it on board a luxury crewed charter yacht, cruising the idyllic Bahamas.

The Bahamas is a diverse and colourful collection of islands set in 100,000 square miles of the world’s clearest ocean – where better to have the vacation of the lifetime surrounded by your loved ones? The close proximity to mainland USA – within 300 miles – ensures convenient access from Florida to some of the world’s best charter yachts which spend the winter charter season in the region. Each island has its own personality with something for everyone whether you want serenity and solitude, nightlife and cuisine or nature and watersports.

There are several well-established cruising areas, with some of the most popular itineraries including the Exuma Cays chain, Nassau and Paradise Island or The Abacos Islands. To truly appreciate these destinations, it’s often best to dedicate a weeklong charter to exploring just one region, but the possibilities are endless.

Seven nights in the Exumas

The Exumas are some of the prettiest and mostly uninhabited islands in the Bahamas starting with Sail Rocks to the north and stretching for more than 100 miles down the west side of the Exuma Sound, with the biggest islands of Great Exuma and Little Exuma on the southern end. Within the chain are dozens of excellent anchorages, hundreds of pure white undisturbed beaches and seemingly endless lush coral gardens. Seven days here could follow this itinerary …

After meeting your yacht and crew in Nassau, it is a beautiful four-hour cruise down to Highbourne Cay where you can spend your first night on board in the impeccable, naturally sheltered harbour. The crew will make sure you want nothing as you sit back and relax on the first leg of your Exuma’s adventure.

Day two will begin with a leisurely breakfast, followed by a swim off the beach, some fun on the water toys or even a more intrepid fishing trip – many yachts now travel with impressive tenders designed for just this purpose. After lunch, the captain will set off for Allan’s Cay where you can explore the nearby beaches and meet the large population of Allan Cay Rock Iguanas. You can feed them by putting a piece of fruit on the end of a stick – the crew will let you know how to interact with the wildlife safely. There are also great snorkelling reefs and plenty more opportunities for fishing. Your second night will be spent at Shroud Cay, just an hour’s cruise away, so enjoy a sundowner and private dinner on deck prepared by the onboard chef.

Although there is so much to see, it is important to sit back and take your time – as the locals do – so day three can be a lazy day spent swimming, savouring a BBQ lunch and making the most of the water toys. Wildlife lovers can look out for sea turtles and tropical birds or even venture to The Wax Cay Cut for a drift dive. Rendezvous diving, where a dive team meet you at your yacht, is the most common way to enjoy diving from a yacht, but some superyachts are equipped with their own SCUBA gear for licenced divers or have an RYA Water Sports Centre license. An early evening departure time creates the opportunity to enjoy a cocktail while cruising to Warderick Wells, the headquarters of the Exuma Land and Sea Park, created in 1958 as the first such park in the world.

Waking up in yet another idyllic spot on day four affords opportunities to explore the 176 square mile land and sea park on one of the walking trails which make the most of the views. Look out for unique bird species such as the Bananaquits – a small black and white bird with yellow breasts and try your luck feeding one by putting a little sugar in the palm of your hand. There is plenty of marine life too, including a full spectrum of tropical fish easy to see with just a snorkel. On to Big Major’s Anchorage at Staniel Cay – an easy 1.5-hour cruise away – for dinner at the popular Staniel Cay Yacht Club which is a great option for dining ashore.

One of the highlights of the Exuma’s is Pig Beach where you can swim with the friendly population of wild pigs – a great start to day five. Thunderball Grotto, made famous by the James Bond movie, is stop number one in the afternoon, followed by Compass Cay where you can snorkel in the caves and swim amongst the population of docile nurse sharks. If you have chosen a yacht with a jacuzzi or pool on board, you can recline in the bubbles and exchange stories with your friends and family as you enjoy a glass of something cold.

In the morning of day six you might like to hike to Rachel’s Bubble Bath which is the name given to one of the best swimming holes in the Caribbean. The pool gets its name from the action of the waves which crash over the rocks at high tide into the lagoon, creating bubbles of white foam – a natural version of a jacuzzi for those without one on board.

After breakfast on day seven, snorkel at Pablo Escobar’s infamous plane wreck before enjoying lunch at McDuff’s Pub – a well-known, rustic open-air restaurant and bar. In the afternoon depart for Atlantis on Nassau where you can enjoy your last evening in style. Try your luck at the casino or dance the night away at “Club Dragons”.

This itinerary gives you a taste for what is on offer in the Bahamas and during Thanksgiving the yacht crew will be on hand to make your experience extra special. There are many other routes you can take through this stunning archipelago, so discuss your ideal destinations, activities and cuisine with your charter broker before booking.

Now you have a better picture of life in the Bahamas all you need to do is choose your perfect charter yacht. There are yachts of all shapes and sizes available for charter from 40-meter-plus superyachts to more affordable 15-meter-plus catamarans. The perfect weather, calm waters and short cruising distances make sailing or motor yachts ideal, so it’s up to you.

The Bahamas has the perfect weather for Thanksgiving with temperatures averaging around 25 degrees with gentle breezes and comfortable water temperatures to keep you cool and make snorkelling and swimming a dream.

So forget ordering the turkey and mixing the cranberries and choose a luxury crewed yacht charter instead.

Pretty much every South African itinerary includes the Mother City – and with no shortage of accommodation options, it can be confusing as to what to choose. On a recent visit, I stayed in Summit on Quarter – a beautifully styled penthouse in one of the city’s most enviable locations. Time to take a little tour of the home…

The welcome

The property is managed by Nox Cape Town and the booking process is seamless. Before your visit, a WhatsApp group is set up (with reciprocal access on a computer), where your hosts facilitate all the details of your visit and are available 24/7. At any time you’re able to get assistance with your booking from the Nox team, and have any questions quickly answered. Our host met us for a brief orientation and the lovely element of a human touch, which I’ve often found missing with self-check-ins.

The penthouse

Summit on Quarter features two luxe bedrooms, an open plan lounge and dining room – and then a rooftop terrace with a pool. The master bedroom has a queen bed, air conditioning, a TV, and then en suite bathroom. The second bedroom also has a queen bed, and TV, and a separate bathroom with a bathtub. Both bedrooms open onto a balcony with a sweeping city views.

The open plan lounge, kitchen and dining area was beautifully styled and fitted out – so much so that it really did feel like we were staying in a home and not a rented apartment. Cooking was a dream in the fully-kitted kitchen, equipped with Nespresso machine, washer/dryer combo, and dishwasher. From here a walk down the passage leads to a glass door and a staircase leading to the apartment’s hero feature!

If you’re going to visit Cape Town, you’re best renting somewhere with a view of Cape Town’s Table Mounain. The best part about Summit on Quarter’s is its spacious penthouse rooftop. Elevated high about the city we danced, watched both sunrise and sunset, swam, and soaked up the sun with the formiddable Table Mountain always towering in the background. While only a four-sleeper, with permission from the team I invited four other friends for dinner and enjoyed a dinner on the rooftop – even in the middle of a Cape Town winter!

The location

Summit on Quarter is in Cape Town’s central De Waterkant suburb. This trendy residential and shopping enclave is essentially a buffer zone between the city, V&A Waterfront and Atlantic Seaboard. Each of these areas is accessible through a short walk. Adjacent to the building is also the Cape Quarter a boutique shopping center. While being cautious, all areas can be walked, however, Uber is readily accessible and for a minimal cost can connect you with all surrounding areas.

Everything you need to plan your trip in 2024

Other nice touches

The Nox team also has a shop so that your rental can come pre-stocked with everything you need. Daily housekeeping is included for those who want the service. With Nox’s extensive network in Cape Town, they’re able to connect you to all kinds of services. On my previous visit to one of their properties, a private chef – and even an exercise instructor had been arranged for us.

The cost

Prices are dependant on the season, and range from R4310 per night, equating to around R1078 per person. The prices also include daily servicing of the apartment (if required) and then cleaning after, and a minimum of a three-night stay applies.

The final verdict

Summit on Quarter offers a very compelling Cape Town stay with its central location, dreamy rooftop with city views, and then all the other services offered with a Nox holiday rental. The combination of location, style and security make it a top Mother City accommodation choice – just be sure to book in advance as dates do go quickly.

Disclosure: Our stay was courtesy of Summit on Quarter.

]]>

Buenos Aires is one of the most famous cities in the world. Known as the Paris of the South, it is a charming mix of Latin and European influence. The Recoleta neighbourhood is lined with with Haussmanian boulevards and elegant buildings whilst San Telmo and La Boca provides a glimpse of the more Latin side of things with brightly coloured buildings jumbled together and tango dancing in the street. Buenos Aire sis the gateway to the rest of Argentina and all that this proud and beautiful country has to offer. From the salt flats and vast canyons of the north right down to the Patagonian ice fields in the south via the Argentine pampas, the stunning wine region and wildlife rich peninsulas and wetlands, there is so much to see. Buenos Aires is always the best place to start and is blessed with a wealth of luxury hotels. Read on for our pick of the best the city has to offer.

The Alvear Palace

This is probably the most iconic luxury hotel in Buenos Aires. Located in the elegant Recoleta neighbourhood, it is the heart of Buenos Aires high society, where locals and visitors alike gather to enjoy afternoon tea in l’Orangerie, sip on a cocktail and ensure they are seen at the right address. The décor harks back to the 1930s with marble pillars, gold leaf and tear drop chandeliers.

The rooms are dressed with gold-leaf print bedspreads and Louis XVI furniture. Toiletries are Hermes, nothing but the best in this exceptional hotel. The style is not all old-world luxury as the top two floors house fifteen new suites, all exuding modern elegance and with a dedicated lounge.

For some of the finest steak in town, guests can book into the Alvear Grill, serving the best of Argentina’s prime cuts. For relaxation, head to one of the two pools, one of which is rooftop or book into the sumptuous spa for an afternoon of pampering. This really is the best address in Buenos Aires with style and service to match.

Palacio Duhau

Just around the corner from the Alvear Palace, is a Grand Hyatt hotel, the Palacio Duhau. Similarly grand, the property is more understated palatial elegance. The service matches that of the Alvear Palace, think butlers, attentive waiters and concierges capable of conjuring up whatever you require however the design is more neutral.

The rooms are decorated in calming creams and chocolate hues. The marble bathrooms are palatial enough to make you regret all your choices in your own house and the large windows offer views over the majestic city.

Guests can dine on a range of cuisines in the hotel’s restaurants. In the Duhau Restaurant and Vinteca, signature Argentinean dishes are paired with the finest wines from the country. For cuisine that focuses on sustainability and diversity, Gioia Cocina Botánica is the spot with exceptional plant-based dishes. The Patisserie serves elegant pastries, and the Oak Bar is a great spot for a cocktail or glass of wine.

Hub Porteño

The only boutique property on this list, Hub Porteño firmly holds its own as one of the best hotels in Buenos Aires. Behind a discreet front door on a quiet street in Recoleta, lies this elegant, cool and unique hotel. Guests are greeted by warm and friendly staff , known as Experience Concierges, and invited to sit briefly for a welcome drink before being shown to their room. No check-in process here as everything is done in a relaxed, discreet manner.

The rooms are spacious and elegant and each is decorated in a unique style. This hotel is all about connecting guests with the real Buenos Aires. The staff are passionate about showcasing the best that the city has to offer and go out of their way to help guests with all the little details.

Their in-house restaurant is Lima, an exceptionally cool eatery that encompasses a fusion between Japanese and Peruvian cuisine, known as Nikkei. This is a fusion that dates back over 100 years and echoes the authenticity that runs through everything at this hotel. Hub Porteño offers the style and service of a luxury hotel combined with the intimacy of a house.

Everything you need to plan your trip in 2024

The Four Seasons

The Four Seasons name always conjures up images of elegance and luxury and the Buenos Aires property is no exception. Occupying one of the most desirable addresses in the city, it is located in Recoleta and spread across a 20th-century mansion and contemporary high-rise. The rooms exude classic style in soft creams and neutral colours, bright and airy with a fresh feel. Suites are more opulent and feature chandeliers, golds and reds.

The pool and spa offer the perfect opportunity for relaxation. The heated pool is Roman-style and the spa has a range of relaxing treatments, perfect after a day exploring the city.

Enjoy a cocktail in the Pony Line bar with décor inspired by Argentina’s proud Polo tradition. Head to their restaurant, Elena for dry-aged steaks and some excellent wines. For a local tradition you cannot beat Sunday barbecue (asado) – in the hotel’s secret garden.

Faena

Designed by Philippe Starck, this hotel is everything you would expect from the famous designer, in a cool and exciting location. The property sits in the Puerto Madero district, home to cool bars and great restaurants and perfect for those looking for a more lively vibe different to the sedate and traditional Recoleta. Philippe Starcks signature red is evident as soon as you step inside the hotel. The rooms are decorated in white with red accents, large mirrors and Starkesque details such as armchairs with swan neck arms.

The Faena is home to the best tango show in town, Rojo Tango. Guests can enjoy an incredible show accompanied by a three-course dinner in the El Cabaret bar. For dramatic dining, look no further than Bistro Sur where unicorn heads adorn the walls and fine food the tables.

The hotel offers a hammam bath, not typical in Latin America and a very welcome addition to its wellness menu which includes a beautiful spa, yoga classes, personal training and tango lessons. This is an eclectic and exciting hotel in a vibrant part of the city.

Casa Lucia

Casa Lucia is the newest luxury opening in Buenos Aires and brings a touch of mid-century style to the Recoleta neighbourhood. Behind its elegant façade sits a luxury hotel well able to hold its own amongst the other big names in neighbourhood.

The grand entrance makes an immediate impression with soaring ceilings and large windows and elegant plants. The décor in the rooms is classic and stylish with neutral tones softened by warm wood accents.

Le Club Bacan is the bar to head to for an aperitif or some of the best mixology in the city. For fine dining on some of Argentina’s best dishes, guests can enjoy La Cantina restaurant. With a well-stocked wine cellar, top-notch staff and stylish décor, this is a welcome addition to the Buenos Aires luxury scene.

African safaris are always an experience and certainly when staying in the comfort of a luxury safari lodge. Beause, let’s be honest, we’re there to see the wildlife but simultaneously we do enjoy the luxuries some of these top-notch properties provide us. And in 2025 there are several new kids on the block to consider for your next safari getaway! Here are 5 of them which you should absolutely put on your to-do list.

andBeyond Suyian Lodge, Kenya

It’s been known for a while now, but the Laikipia region in Kenya has quickly become one of the most unique wildlife hotspots on the African continent. Set within it’s own 44.000-acre conservancy, the Suyian Lodge will be able to provide one of the most amazing private safari experiences that you can find as only the guests from its 14 suites will enjoy all of this stunning wilderness. We all know andBeyond, they don’t do half work and from the looks of it, Suyian Lodge is raising the bar even more.

Effortlessly blending into its surroundings, the lodge is an architectural marvel which blends modern touches with earthy materials and strong textures, allowing its guest to truly take in the views over the conservancy thanks to its superb location on the high ground. Inspiration was taken from the granite kopjes which are dotted around the area. Of course all the suites come with a private pool and massive terrace, but for me it’s the interiors which ooze calmness and relaxation that make them the perfect retreat after an amazing game drive or any other activity.

Talking of activities, how about a camel safari in the land of Samburu? Or rather take it to the sky with a heli flight which shows you all the unique landscapes the area has to offer? One the items I would strongly suggest though, is to go on a walking safari as it really mets you sharpen your senses and feel in touch with your surroundings. Who knows, you might spot the elusive black leopard which roams around the area. Melanistic leopards are rare but so are lodges like these yet andBeyond clearly made it happen again.

ENVI Sisini Mara, Tanzania

If you are looking for a transformative escape, then ENVI Sisini Mara is the one to go for next year. Located in the middle of Tanzania‘s amazing Serengeti NP, this boutique camp forms the ideal base to experience not only the great migration, but equally the vast open plains which are teaming with wildlife. You might not have heard of the brand yet, but keep an eye on it cause with their focus on sustainability, well-being and responsible tourism, they’re bound to be among the top players in this very specific niche.

Being one with nature is key at any of the ENVI properties and at Sisini Mara it’s no different. With massive decks surrounding the 10 luxury tents you are naturally drawn outside to take it all in and let the views, smells and sounds dictate the rhythm of your heartbeat. The soft earthy color palate that runs through the whole lodge creates the most ideal safe haven in between your game drives.

The spa is a blissful treat which will undoubtedly help you process all the sights you’ve had in the park, and together with the pool, lounge and bar they’ll form the ideal environment to roam around when you’re at the lodge. Even when the game drives are the highlight of any safari experience, having ample relaxation opportunities and venues is a luxury which can’t be underestimated.

Chichele Presidential, Zambia

The fourth property under the Chiawa umbrella, Chichele Presidential in South Luangwa national park is the result of a collaboration between Chichele safaris and the famous Cumings family (owners of Chiawa safaris). The property was originally constructed for the Zambian president back in the 70’s, and was later run by Sanctuary Retreats together with A&K. However in 2018 the current owners took over and now it is almost ready to be shown to the world.

Thanks to its initial purpose, it is situated at South Luangwa’s best spot, being the high ground, providing an incredible 360 degrees view across the park. And to match the views they have pulled out all the stops in terms of both the hard-and soft product. It will also be a carbon positive lodge, ensuring they continue the conservation legacy for which the Cumings family is known.

Stand-out features are the insanely beautiful interiors, massive outdoor decks – with private plunge pool- and of course the airconditioning. For many this is a luxury which has become the norm like running water and electricity, yet in the middle of a game reserve it is still a huge accomplishment due to several reasons. Add to this an insane infinity lap pool, stunning spa and plenty of other entertainment to keep you busy in between game drives, and you know this will soon become one of Zambia’s biggest success stories.

Everything you need to plan your trip in 2024

Lemala Osonjoi Lodge, Tanzania

Of course the Lemala brand isn’t new in Tanzania as it has already several camps dotted around the country. It will however be their first proper lodge at the famous Ngorongoro Crater even though they already have a tented camp, but Osonjoi is undoubtedly playing in another league with a clear step up in terms of luxury and comfort. With its clean lines and black exterior it blends perfectly into the surroundings, while the light and earthy tones of the interior allow the guests to relax and unwind after an exciting game drive.

Located near the Lemala gate (not a coincidence) it gives the opportunity to enter the national park from the east side, which is known to be the lesser crowded one. This is of course a big advantage as you are more likely to have a sighting all on your own – early in the morning or right before the evening falls – when you enter or leave the park from this side.

There are 20 suites of with some of them being 2-bedroom family suites to accommodate easily this segment too. And it’s in the rooms that you’ll quickly see why this is the upgraded version of the brand. Slow boring wood stoves and hot water bottles in your bed are just a few examples of how Osonjoi makes sure that you spend the cooler nights in pure comfort. Of course they had to install my favourite feature, being an outdoor shower, but the list is literally endless. If luxury in a non-negotiable for you when visiting the Ngorongoro Crater, then this property needs to be on your shortlist!

Natural Selection Mbamba, Botswana

Being the brand with one of the largest portfolios in Botswana, Natural Selection ups the ante with its newest venture being Mbamba. With a prime location in the northern part of the Okavango, it ensures to offer amazing year-round wildlife viewings. Especially predators like wild dogs and lions are known to roam around this area on a very frequent basis. Strategically situated in the shade of the giant leadwood trees that surround the camp, its location was carefully picked by safari legend Ralph Bousfield in a spot just next to the famous Moremi Game Reserve.

The 12 canvas tents carry forward that vintage look and style which we know all too well from the irreplaceable Jack’s Camp, and I’m glad they are continuing to use it as it add that extra bit of safari flair to the overall experience. Interiors you need to think four-poster beds, Persian rugs and plenty of mahogany to truly send you back in time, yet with all the modern additions which you can think of. They even decided to add a pool pavilion like the one they have in the Kalahari.

The game drives are of course the highlight of each day and with the high density of predators and other wildlife in the area, it’s important to take you time during those drives to fully take it all in. But also don’t forget the abundance of bird life, cause with over 350 species recorded this is without a doubt equally a dream destination for any ornithologist. Especially from the quiet mokoro which allows you to scout from a lower angle, it’s the perfect way to truly take it all in, cause the Okavango has a lot to offer!

Of course there a re many other lodges coming up in 2025 and even in 2026 there’s already a few on the horizon, but for sure these 5 are among those that tickle my curiosity the most. Which one would you like to experience?

Kristof Eyckmans

Kristof Eyckmans is a travel writer from Antwerp, Belgium. He’s been living all across the globe and while he loves wildlife and nature, he can still enjoy a good urban jungle.

“Chicken Pizza” is the first thing that came to my mind when I read about “Chichen Itza”. Later I found that, one of the most iconic structures in the world is located in Chichen Itza. If you plan to visit Mexico, you are bound to visit this place.

Mexico is enchanting! Heavenly food, cheaper prices, pristine beaches – what else do you need for a home away from your home? Saying so, El Castillo, the iconic step pyramid that has been declared as one of the seven wonders in the world is the most significant place to visit in Mexico. The pyramid is located in Chichen Itza, and it can be covered as a day trip from Playa Del Carmen or Cancun.

Where is Chichen Itza?

Chichen Itza SignboardChichen Itza Signboard
Chichen Itza is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Mexico

Chichen Itza is situated in Mexico’s southeast part named Yucatan Peninsula, close to Belize and Guatamala. Despite being on a peninsula, it is far from the most beautiful beaches. Chichen Itza is 180 km from Playa del Carmen, and it takes roughly two and a half hours to get there. If you’re travelling from Cancun, allow an extra 30 minutes. Merida is the nearest major town from Chichen Itza.

Chichen Itza Day Trip – Journey Begins [7:30 AM]

This vehicle took me to Chichen Itza from Playa del Carmen

I left Playa Del Carmen early in the morning to travel to Chichen Itza. A vehicle carrying more vacationers arrived from Cancun. Because Playa Del Carmen is closer to Chichen Itza, I could extend my sleep by 30 minutes. Our tour guide was a pleasant woman who spoke English and Spanish well.

Stoppage for shopping and lunch [11:30 AM]

Cooperative Maya Chichen ItzaCooperative Maya Chichen Itza
Our longer stoppage on way to Chichen Itza

The day was sunny and bright. The clouds were everywhere, hanging. Mexico is a vibrant country, and I adored how everything was painted. There was more information being given by our guide than I could take in. We stopped for a 10-minute bathroom break midway, which allowed us to restock on food as well. We stopped just 10 to 12 kilometres from where we were going to eat the lunch that was part of the tour package. But shopping came first, then came the food!

Mayan SouvenirsMayan Souvenirs
Plenty of souvenirs to choose from!

The store where we paused was called Cooperative Maya. We were told that a group of cooperative women ran it. It was a sizable space with a lot of things.

Maya Skulls and SculpturesMaya Skulls and Sculptures
Skulls everywhere – do you wanna scare someone at your home?

In most sites, souvenirs were available. Some of them were on the table, while others were hung on the wall. They were organised, and some of them were accompanied by further details. Additionally, I discovered some magical stones that can ease your suffering (I was in desperate need of them)!

Traditional Maya ClothingTraditional Maya Clothing

The focus wasn’t solely on mementos. The clothing on show was authentic Mayan clothing. The majority of the clothing was made of cotton that had been vibrantly coloured. I didn’t buy anything, but I saw lots of people choosing some of the products that were on exhibit! After a buffet meal and an hour’s rest, we continued travelling.

Inside the ruins of Chichen Itza [1:30 AM]

Kukulkan Pyramid

Chichen Itza Different PerspectiveChichen Itza Different Perspective
Chichen Itza has a moderately large complex with several interesting things

At 1:30 PM, we arrived in Chichen Itza. One of the most significant cities in the Maya world was Chichen Itza. This ruin was most likely constructed in the ninth century. It served as a significant hub for trade, commerce, and religion during the Mayan civilisation. The city was abandoned in the 12th century and then rediscovered in the 19th century.

The Chichen Itza complex contains numerous structures, including the ball court and the temple of the warriors. However, Kukulkan Pyramid is the most well-known of them. One of the most recognisable buildings in the entire globe, it. Its historical importance led to its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Chichen Itza ComplexChichen Itza Complex
The pyramid is the center of attraction in Chichen Itza complex

Stepped in shape and closely aligned with the movements of the sun is the Kukulkan Pyramid. It was a temple devoted to Kukulcan, a Maya god. The pyramid has four sides, each with a 91-step staircase. The 365 steps, which represent the days of the solar year, are formed when the top platform is added.

Temple of Warriors

We were given a knowledgable older man who was explaining us the history when we first arrived on site. I could barely stand the heat while listening to everyone. I made the decision to go around the courtyard. You will reach the Temple of Warriors if you follow suit.

Temple of warriors closer lookTemple of warriors closer look
A closer look at the Temple of warriors in Chichen Itza

The Temple of the Warriors is a step pyramid made up of several warrior-like stone statues. The sculptures were grouped in four rows and formed columns. Some of them have shields and spears in their hands. It may have formerly had a rooftop, but it has since collapsed. When I realised it was constructed more than a century ago, I experienced a unique emotion.

Group of thousands columns

Group of thousands columns literally consist of thousand columns!

If you go to the south of Temple of the Warriors, you will find the group of thousands columns. It’s basically a series of columns – approximately 200 of them. The columns are made of stone and covered a significant area. It is assumed that it served as a hub where people gathered to engage in a variety of activities. Maybe there was also a market there!

Great Ball Court

Great Ball CourtGreat Ball Court

The playing field is 168 by 70 metres and is separated into two halves by a wall. Like many other ancient games, it was played to the death, and the losers were offered as sacrifices to the god. Thankfully, it no longer exists today, and only ceremonial activities continue to take place. When you stand in front of the wall, don’t forget to clap. It will make a resonant noise.

End of our Chichen Itza Trip [3:00 PM]

Wall of Chichen ItzaWall of Chichen Itza

We were in the Chichen Itza complex for around 90 minutes. Even while it may not seem like much time, you can see pretty much everything it has to offer in this amount of time. Do I enjoy it? Of course, it was great! On the other hand, if you let me pick one, I’d rather visit the Pyramids of Giza on any given day.

Cenote Saamal [4:30 PM]

Cenote SaamalCenote Saamal
A rainy day in Cenote Saamal

After leaving Chichen Itza, we stopped at the Cenote Saamal on the way back. One of Yukatan’s largest cenotes, Cenote Saamal has an open sky, blue water, and a sandy bottom.

The numerous cenotes of the Yucatan Peninsula are well known. A cenote is a naturally formed trench that exposes groundwater and was formed when limestone bedrock collapsed.

The Yucatan Peninsula’s limestone bedrock frequently collapses and produces countless cenotes due to its numerous fissures. Typically, people dive into the water, swim, and if there are any caverns, they even go through them.

I loved the interiors of Cenote Saamal complex

Sadly, by the time we arrived at the Cenote Saamal, the lovely and brilliant day had turned dark, and it eventually began to rain violently. Since thundering can harm humans, it forced the authorities to ban swimming there at that moment.

It was a lovely setup!

Since I wasn’t going to swim, I spent some time admiring the natural beauty. The landscaping and trees made the compound look lovely. There are restaurants and souvenir shops in the complex. I took a stroll and found it colorful as well as peaceful!

Back to Playa Del Carmen [7:30 PM]

Amidst heavy rain, we arrived back to Playa at 7:30 PM. So, it took us a total of around 12 hours for the Chichen Itza day trip from Playa del Carmen. I didn’t find it rushed or exhausting. So, you can do it easily if you don’t want to stay in the nearby town of Merida which is the gateway of Chichen Itza.

How to book a day trip from Playa or Cancun to Chichen Itza?

You can shop around in the Playa Del Carmen or Cancun – you will find plenty of tour operators selling this trip. However, we suggest to choose one of the following tours. They are reliable and well rated.

 1. Classic tour to Chichen Itza from Playa or Cancun
 2. Coba, Chichen Itza, Cenote & Valladolid with Buffet Lunch

Whenever we think of Thailand, we think of pristine beaches, and exotic islands, and, I can’t blame anyone for that. Thailand has some of the best islands in the world, like Koh Lanta or Koh Kood. However, Thailand is not all about beaches. Welcome to Bangkok, a city that never fails to captivate its visitors with its vibrant energy and rich cultural heritage. In just three days, you can uncover the hidden gems that make this city so enchanting. Immerse yourself in its intricate tapestry of ancient temples, vibrant markets, and mouthwatering street food. From the iconic Grand Palace to the peaceful Wat Arun, each temple tells a story of Thailand’s history and spirituality. Get ready for an adventure that will leave you awestruck and longing for more. This is your ultimate travel guide and itinerary for how to spend the best 2 days of your life in Bangkok.

2 Days in Bangkok Itinerary: Day 1

If you are from a colder country and Bangkok is your first Thai destination, then take the first day slowly because, the heat of Bangkok can be brutal and unforgiving.

Wat Arun

Wat ArunWat Arun
Wat Arun is the most beautiful temple in Bangkok.

There are countless temples in Bangkok, but Wat Arun is the best value for money, in my opinion. On the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, there is a beautiful looking Buddhist temple – and that is Wat Arun. I took a public boat across the river and arrived at my destination.

The term “Arun” means “Dawn” in Thai, therefore, Wat Arun is the dawn temple. It’s no surprise that the best time to see this temple is at dawn. This temple was built in the 17th century, destroyed by the Barmese, and rebuilt again in the early 19th century.

You need to put your focus on the smaller details in Wat Arun; they are beautiful!

Inside, there are tower-like constructions composed of colorful mosaics and polcelin. There are numerous intricate designs to be seen there. These structures are known as Prang.

The primary attraction of Wat Arun is the central Prang, which stands more than 70 meters tall. The center Prang is thought to represent Mount Meru, a sacred peak.

If you look carefully, you will find four smaller towers, or prangs, surrounding the central Prang. All of them are dedicated to a Hindu God and have intricate designs.

You can ascend the stairs to get a better view of the temples from various viewpoints. When there are a lot of tourists, space may be limited, but if you have patience, you will have it all to yourself.

So, the best way to explore the temple is to go up the steps, investigate it, and then go back down. Because it appears differently from the top than it does from the ground. You will find some fantastic sculptures on the wall as well.

Inside the temple, there is a hall. The main attraction is a Big Buddha statue. You will find the Buddha in deep thought.

There are several smaller statues in front of the Buddha. If you look closely, you will notice that the ordination hall is filled with murals of Buddhas of all ages.

Surprisingly, among the golden-colored conventional Buddha sculptures, I discovered one that is all green! He wore a separate crown on his head and had several trinkets on his body. It was as if we were visiting Earth from another planet!

Wat Arun also has a large courtyard, which is ideal for taking photos with the temple in the background. After visiting the temple, you will be able to rest here as well. You will also find colorful photos on the wall.

If you’ve already seen Wat Arun during the day, you should see it again at night. When turned on at night, the light literally glitters, and the golden color looks fantastic!

Grand Palace

The Grand Palace is really grand! If you want to observe the beauty of traditional Thai architecture, then you’ve got to love this place. This was made in 1782, which makes it more than 500 years old.

The old name of Thailand was Siam, and the Grand Palace was the the former residence of the Kings of Siam. The king, royal courts, and royal Government were based here until 1925.

You can just roam around the complex to enjoy it. However, you should visit the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew), which is considered to be one of the most sacred Buddhist relics in Thailand. The Grand Palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Just like, Wat Arun, the grand palace looks lovely at night, and you should pay a visit there.

Enjoy the Bangkok Skyline

While visiting Wat Arun, and the Grand Palace, you should have walked a lot in the immense heat. Now is the time to enjoy the impressive skyline of Bangkok. You have plenty of options to choose from, however, the best way to enjoy it is to visit King Power Mahanakhon. This SkyWalk is Thailand’s tallest observatory deck and one of the best places to enjoy a sunset in Bangkok.

Get a Thai Massage

Even if you dislike the notion of someone else touching your body, you must get a Thai massage while in Thailand. It’s a must-do, and it’s so rejuvenating that I wanted to take it again and again. Many people believe that receiving a Thai massage will result in sexual participation. It’s not entirely correct; you just need to make sure you’re not headed to a bad area. Thai massage can be painful to your body, but this pain presents immense pleasure; If this is your first time, you can tone it down with a neck or foot massage.

But, that’s not the only reason for visiting this place. It hosts several interconnected teakwood houses surrounded by gardens and greenery. The architecture is a mix of Thai and Western cultures, which gives it a great look.

The complex has some ponds as well, along with decorative statues. You will find flowers, frogs, and whatnot. It will take you to nature instantly in the hustle and bustle of Bangkok.

Boat Trip on the Chao Phraya River

Taking a boat tour along the Chao Phraya River is one of the best ways to see the Bangkok cityscape.

The Chao Phraya River is the lifeline of Bangkok. It plays a significant role in carrying people and goods in Bangkok. If you look at the map of Bangkok, you will find it like an artery. It is a must to hop on a boat or take a river cruise to enjoy Bangkok. It has two advantages, you won’t need to walk, which provides relief from the heat. On top of it, you will get panoramic views of the city.

Many of Bangkok’s most prominent landmarks and cultural attractions can be located along the Chao Phraya River’s banks. Among them are the Grand Palace, Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha), Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn), and a number of luxury hotels and restaurants with stunning riverfront views. You can book a cruise online.

Shopping and IMAX experience

Bangkok offers numerous wonderful shopping centers where you can buy almost anything. You should go there to see the difference between street shops and malls. A movie in IMAX will also keep you cool in Bangkok’s heat. The best IMAX theater in Bangkok is located in the Paragon Cineplex.

The street food of Bangkok

It takes a couple of hours to experience Bangkok’s street dishes, which are really excellent! My favourite was a variety of grilled chicken. There was also pork available. You will receive not only the chicken itself or the wings, but also the gizzard, liver, and skin.

Some markets in Bangkok have food carts like these.

It’s not just about the chicken pieces, it’s also about tempura, waffles, and cutlets.

Hot, spicy, yummy – Tom Yum Goong in 3 words

Tom Yum Goong was my favorite cuisine. It’s a hot and sour soup made with three herbs. You have the option of ordering fish or prawns. If you choose wisely, they will also include an egg. If you can tolerate spicy cuisine, this is an excellent food to have. Try Pe Aor restaurant for a bowl of Tom Yum Goong.

Enjoy the nightlife of Sukhumvit 11

Sukhumvit BangkokSukhumvit Bangkok
Sukhumvit 11 is one of the most exciting streets in Bangkok

Sukhumvit is a district in Thailand, and Sukhumvit 11 is a street inside it. You won’t want to leave this colorful, lively, and entertaining location if you are a party lover. Sukhumvit 11 is widely regarded as Bangkok’s most dynamic street. Get off at Nana BTS station and walk a short distance to reach this 800-meter-long boulevard filled with bars, restaurants, nightclubs, and live music. You must visit this location after sunset to experience its genuine character.

Best Places to stay in Bangkok

Bangkok has a very efficient public transportation system. So, if you book your hotel near a BTS station, you can visit many places. Make sure to buy a BTS card beforehand.

Ibis Style Sukhumvit is near a BTS and a good value for your money.

Grand Mercure Bangkok Atrium is a big hotel with fantastic buffet breakfast options. I found it good value for money as well.

Siam Subway Hostel and Cafe is an excellent choice if you want to stay in a hostel. It’s just stone away from the Samyot MRT station.

Peaceful house is perfect for you if you are traveling in a group.

Kimpton Maa-Lai, Carlton Hotel Sukhumbhit, Siam Kempinski Hotel Bangkok, and Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit are some of the best options if you prefer luxury.

Fly Me to the Moon is a bespoke travel agency that specialises in crafting unique and unforgettable experiences in Greece. With a passion for the country’s rich history, culture, and natural beauty, they design itineraries that effortlessly introduce travellers to the authentic Greek way of life.

Last summer, as I planned my return to Corfu, I sought the expertise of Fly Me to the Moon. I wanted to explore a side of the island I hadn’t experienced during my previous visit. Their invaluable insights helped me rediscover Corfu, especially at a time when the island was crowded with tourists from all over the world after another record-breaking year for tourist arrivals in Greece post-Covid. I wanted to experience Corfu without the crowds while still enjoying its magic. As they say at Fly Me To The Moon, you could follow the crowds or let Fly Me to the Moon show you the Greece you wouldn’t find on your own.

A timeless island paradise

Corfu, or Kerkyra, is a captivating Greek island nestled in the Ionian Sea. Renowned for its stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, Corfu has enchanted visitors for centuries. Influenced by Venetian, French, and British rule, the island boasts a unique blend of cultures evident in its architecture, traditions, and cuisine.

From Odysseus’s mythical journey to Shakespeare’s poetic descriptions, Corfu has inspired countless legends and literary works. The island’s allure has also attracted historical figures such as Napoleon, Empress Sissi, and Kaiser Wilhelm II. Even James Bond found himself entangled in a thrilling adventure on Corfu’s shores.

Arriving late in the evening from London, I found Corfu to be a convenient destination with numerous international flights. Especially from London, you’ll find numerous direct flights arriving on the island every year (April to October). Following Fly Me To The Moon’s suggestion, I rented a car from a local agency (to avoid the post-COVID surge in prices, long lines, and excessive administrative processes) and drove to Agios Prokopios village.

With only one coffee shop (also a bar, bakery, and convenience store!) in the centre of the village and a permanent local population, Agios Prokopios served as a peaceful oasis during the peak tourist season. This small, non-touristy village, where Fly Me To The Moon had arranged a traditional house for my stay, is conveniently located in the heart of the island. From Agios Prokopios, I had easy access to Corfu town, both north and south Corfu, famous beaches, and villages. Exploring Corfu from this base allowed me to avoid crowded roads and traffic, especially considering the thousands of tourists visiting the island.

Corfu’s rich history and unique lifestyle

A visit to Corfu isn’t complete without exploring its UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town, a labyrinth of Venetian architecture, cobblestone streets, and historic landmarks like the Old and New Fortresses. To truly appreciate Corfu’s rich history and artistic heritage, be sure to visit the Archaeological Museum, the Byzantine Museum, and the Municipal Art Gallery. I found myself returning to the Old Town several times, both day and night, to soak up its unique atmosphere.

In the evenings, Corfu Town comes alive with its narrow streets, Spianada Square, and vibrant nightlife. Indulge in delicious Corfiot cuisine at renowned restaurants like Pomo d’oro, Venetsianiko Pigadi (Venetian Well), and Tο tavernaki tis Marinas. Don’t miss out on trying local specialties like Pastitsada, Sofrito, Noumboulo, and Bourdetto, paired with Tsitsibira (ginger beer) or Corfiot Red Beer. For a sweet treat, savor Mandoles (caramelized almonds), Sykomaida (fig paste), or traditional desserts like galaktoboureko, mandoles, and loukoumades at local bakeries and confectioneries – to name just a few: Periklis Alexis’s dairy shop for galaktoboureko, Papagiorgis confectionery for mandoles and ice cream, and Stazi Meli for traditional loukoumades, all in Corfu old town.

While exploring the island and after a long day at a beach, be sure to try some of the local restaurants outside of Corfu Town. To Stavrodromi restaurant, located between Agios Ounoufrios and Pelekas villages, offers traditional Greek cuisine, while Grill restaurant near Kastellani village is a popular spot with locals. And don’t forget to enjoy a meal at one of the many beach bars and restaurants around the island.

Although I visited many beaches during my trip, Agios Gordios beach became my favourite. I loved spending my afternoons there at one of the beach bars and staying until after sunset, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and stunning views.

A taste of adventure

As an active traveller, I couldn’t resist spending two days exploring Corfu’s hiking trails. My first hike was from Paliokastritsa to Angelokastro Castle, a moderately challenging trek rewarded with breath-taking panoramic views. Along the way, I paused in the charming village of Lakones for a refreshing break and a delicious yogurt with honey and nuts, admiring the stunning views of Palaokastritsa.

After the hike, I cooled off at the beautiful Palaokastritsa beach, the refreshing cold water a welcome respite from the summer sun. I ended up spending the whole evening there, enjoying a drink at Aragosta Beach Club and a delicious dinner. The combination of excellent service, delicious food, and a relaxed atmosphere kept me there with no regrets. The risotto was particularly delicious!

My second hiking adventure took me to the summit of Mount Pantokrator. Starting from the picturesque village of Old Peritheia, I ascended the island’s highest peak, enjoying stunning views along the way. After my descent, I explored the historic village of Old Peritheia and visited Canal D’ Amour, a famous beach known for its unique rock formation.

Continuing my journey, I discovered Porto Timoni, one of Corfu’s most beautiful and secluded beaches. Following Fly Me To The Moon’s recommendation, I headed to Afionas village to witness a spectacular sunset. Anemos Bar and Restaurant, a popular spot for enjoying the sunset, is a must-visit. Be sure to arrive early or make a reservation to secure a good table.

Everything you need to plan your trip in 2024

Royal flair and Corfu class

On my final day in Corfu, I indulged in a bit of royal flair. I visited the magnificent Achilleion Palace, a neoclassical mansion built for Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Sisi) in the late 19th century. The palace is adorned with stunning statues and frescoes inspired by Greek mythology, reflecting Sisi’s fascination with ancient Greece. Right after, I explored the Mon Repos Palace, the former summer residence of the Greek royal family and birthplace of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh.

For a delightful final meal, I dined at Flisvos The Seaside Experience, a beachfront restaurant next to the Holy Monastery of Panagia Vlacherna. Enjoying the delicious cuisine and breathtaking views of airplanes landing on the island was a memorable experience. After dinner, I strolled back to Corfu Town for a night walk, exploring the narrow streets and enjoying a nightcap at Cale Larga, a popular spot for quality drinks and late-night chats. I particularly enjoyed the gin and tonic with an olive twist!

If you have more time, consider escaping the crowds at Agios Georgios beach (near Afionas village and Porto Timoni beach) or taking a boat tour to explore hidden coves and nearby islands like Paxos and Antipaxos. While I always plan to visit these islands during my trips to Corfu, I often find myself so captivated by the island itself that I end up saving them for another time. This way, I always have an excuse to return!

Fly Me to the Moon and back to Corfu!

I always find myself drawn back to Corfu! For some reason, I can never get enough of this island, making it one of my favorite Greek escapes. And it’s not just for summer. Corfu is an amazing place to visit year-round. Besides summer, it’s particularly famous and popular during Easter, attracting thousands of travelers. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or cultural immersion, Corfu offers something for everyone. With its breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and warm hospitality, this enchanting island is sure to leave a lasting impression.

If you’re looking to experience Corfu like a true insider, Fly Me to the Moon is your ideal guide. As Elena Papanicolaou, founder of Fly Me to the Moon says: “There is something pure and primitive about Greece. The soul of the country – the vibe – is what makes it unique. You can absorb that essence, especially in more unexplored places. If you just breathe and close your eyes or look up at the sky, you feel like you’re a part of the millennia, that are speaking to you.”
